Why is integrating art important in the classroom?
The use of standardized testing stripped away the creativity children once found enjoyment in with art. All art classes were cut down to accommodate study time for "more important" subjects. By just focusing on core subjects alone, students can become easily distracted and tired of learning about the same material which can also lead to disciplinary problems. Art is just as important as the core subjects and needs to be treated as such. Art goes hand in hand with Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies. How can you sort colors without art? How can you learn about the leaning Tower of Pisa without visualizing what it looks like? Art has helped students embrace their learning and retain their knowledge. This graph shows how Bates Middle School in Maryland's test scores were influenced over the years once art was integrated into everyday lessons. |
